Suzanne Mah Memorial Texas Scramble Golf Tournament – August 25, 2013

Blue Willow Restaurant sponsored another fun filled tournament at Hunter’s Green Golf Club, with “special” holes to challenge the experienced and novice golfers.  Great fun was had by all.

Jordi Wiedman, Oil Kings Director of Business Operations, was our honorary guest. Jordi gave us a great summary of Oil Kings’ history and the plan for this year. The tournament was concluded with a wonderful meal provided by the friendly staff at Hunter’s Green, followed by door prizes (including a golf bag and 4 Oiler jerseys) and raffle draws.  We had wonderful prizes donated by generous people, businesses and organizations.  From the tournament and the sales of the mulligans and raffle tickets and donations from kind and generous people, we were able to raise $ 4100 dollars for the Suzanne Mah Humour Fund, which supports the Lite House at the Cross Cancer Institute. Proceeds will also be used to help volunteers’ programs, such as TV rentals for patients.

For pictures of the teams, click on:

Are you a Dragon?

People born in the year of the dragon are flamboyant and ambitious which stems from an abundance of self-confidence. Dragons are caring and are always willing to lend a hand but because of their proud nature, they rarely ask for help. Still dragons must be mindful that their insatiable drive does result in quick and violent tempers and can lead to exhaustion and a strangely unfulfilled feeling. Dragons are most compatible with monkeys and rats.

Famous people born in the year of the dragon: Colin Farrell, Julia Ormond, Reese Witherspoon, John Lennon, Ringo Starr, Al Pacino and Matt Dillon.

A festival like no other!

For one week, Asia erupts into one large celebration where each day has its own significance. By far the most important day is New Year's Eve where the whole family gets together for supper. Some of the mandatory dishes are long noodles (symbolizing long life), whole chicken (representing a happy life) and pieces of pork, fish and other meats (signifying wealth and good fortune). For children the highlight of the day is when they receive "lucky money" in little red envelopes - the colour of good fortune of course.

The following days of the week are devoted to visiting friends and extended family. At the end of each day, individuals pay homage to their ancestors by placing food and fruits (in even numbers) beneath their pictures and by burning symbolic money and incense.

Another popular tradition is the lion dance. In the Chinese culture the lion is seen as a brave and noble creature that brings good fortune. The lion dances through buildings and streets to the beat of drums and gongs to scare off evil spirits and to bring prosperity in the New Year.

Holidays made simple

The Holiday Season always seems so stressful: rushing, shopping and cleaning. So we’ve put together a few tips to navigate the dining scene no matter which restaurant you go to:

For Dining In

  1. Make a reservation
  2. Avoid the rush between 5:30-7pm
  3. For large parties, call a day before and order the food in advance so it leaves more time for visiting and less time figuring out what to eat
  4. Dine in on a Tues, Wed or Thurs
  5. Tell your server whether anyone in your party has allergies

For Take-Out

  1. Phone in take-out orders when you are not hungry so the food will be ready by the time you are hungry
  2. Call a day in advance to place large orders (8 people or more) and arrange for a pick up time
  3. Avoid the rush of phone calls between 5:30-6:30pm.
  4. Place your order on a quieter day like Wed or Thurs

Most important tip: Be patient. Every restaurant is doing its best to get their food out quickly but a slam of orders going into the kitchen all at once or, in the case of delivery orders, road conditions can dramatically change the wait times.

Remember the holiday season is a busy time for everyone (including restaurants) so here’s to planning ahead and being considerate to one another over the holiday season!

Thanks to everyone that came out and braved the rain during the Street Performers Festival and all the of people that took their tummy to the Taste of Edmonton! Thanks for stopping by the Blue Willow trailer or tent, we appreciate all your support!

June 29, 2011

Soak in the sun! Edmonton's summer festivals are on Sir Winston Churchill Square. Come see what Blue Willow is cooking on the go!

From July 8-17 take in the sights, sounds and laughs of some of the world's best buskers. To see the line up of entertainment go to the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival's website. Remembe your Blue Willow Spring Rolls and Green Onion cake - they make excellent spectator food!

Got the munchies or a serious case of the sweet tooth? Bring your tummy and your appetite to the Taste of Edmonton from July 21-30 and sample some of the best dishes that Edmonton restaurants have to offer. Blue Willow will be serving its classic Pineapple Chicken and unveiling its newest dessert Lucky Pockets - bananas and sweet red been (similar texture to chocolate) are folded in a wonton wrap and crisped to perfection. Served with whip cream and raspberry sauce for tasty dipping.

For those who have never tried red bean, it's not a vegetable. Red Bean is a popular Asian dessert and when mashed has arguably the same consistency and sweetness as chocolate. The Lucky Pockets dessert has combined a popular Asian treat and paired it with classic western tastes. The best of both worlds!

For more information on the Taste of Edmonton go to their website.

See you there!

January 26, 2010 - Celebrate the New Year Chinese style at the Blue Willow Restaurant with traditional dishes

-----------------------------------------

Golden Tiger Year!

Born in the year of the Tiger, this individual will have enormous, vigorous energy. Honourable, loyal, sensitive, generous to others, the tigers can innovate and initiate action quickly and provide leadership. Tigers tend to be reflective in their judgement and introverted. Although the golden tiger is associated with wealth, the year of 2010 will be a mixed prosperity with gains and losses. Tigers are most compatible with Dogs, Dragons, and Horses.

-----------------------------------------

December 24, 2008 - The New Year is Around the corner

Happy Holidays Everyone,

Just a reminder, Blue Willow is open for both New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Our hours of operation are as follows:

New Year's Eve
Dining: 4-9:45pm (last table)
1st seating: 4-5pm and 2nd seating: 7pm and onwards
Delivery/Pick-up: 4-10:30pm (last order)

New Year's Day
Dining: 4-8:30pm (last table)
no seatings
Delivery/Pick-Up: 4-8:30pm (last order)

Reservations are strongly recommended since these are the busiest days of the year. As well, the Egg Foo Yong or Hot and Sour Soup dishes will not be available on these days because of their time consuming nature; however the rest of regular menu will be available. If you would like to avoid the rush, try making reservations around 5pm (or earlier) or after 7:30pm.

For those looking to place a pick-up or delivery order, avoid the phone's busy signal by placing your order a day or two in advance. State the time range when you would like the order and leave the rest to us. For larger orders, we may call you back the day of the order to confirm it.

We hope these tips helped!

Happy New Year from everyone at the Blue Willow,

Patrick Mah
Manager

The Big Festival

Imagine all of the North American holidays put into one week and you’ll have an idea of how big Chinese New Year is in Asia. Despite its title, Chinese New Year is celebrated differently across various regions in China, but there are many similar traditions.

According to the zodiac calendar, each year is associated with an animal with its own character traits. In sequential order, these animals are: the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. 2008 is the Year of the Rat.

Not a dirty rat!

The Year of the Rat is the first year of the twelve zodiac animals so start something new – a new look or hobby!

Those born in the Year of the Rat possess a creative imagination making them good problem-solvers, leaders, entrepreneurs and financial advisors. But wealth and success come at a price – hard work and stress. In fact, some say that a rat born during the night will have a more difficult life than one born during the day. Rats are most compatible with the dragon, monkey and ox.

Famous People born in the Year of the Rat: Louis Armstrong, Marlon Brando, Gene Kelly, Sean Penn
