7th day of the 7th Lunar month falls on August 29th this year.  This day is also called Chinese Valentine’s Day or Qixi Festival or Double 7th Festival.  In Asian countries, such as China, Japan, Vietnam and Korea, couples show their love for each other on this day.

In ancient times, it was believed that Niulang, a cow herder and Zhinu, a weaver girl, married against the wishes of the weaver girl’s mother.  As punishment the mother brought them into the heavens and created the Milky Way, separating them forever.  Magpies were sympathetic and once a year – on the 7th day of the 7th month, formed a bridge over the Milky Way, allowing the 2 lovers to reunite at the centre.
